One-off vs monthly website pricing — which is better?
One-off pricing means you pay once and own the site. Monthly pricing spreads cost but never ends and you rent the site. For most businesses one-off wins over time.
Short answer: One-off pricing means you pay once, own the site, and stop paying. Monthly pricing spreads the cost but usually never ends, and you are effectively renting. For most small businesses a one-off site is cheaper over time and leaves you in control.
What is the real difference?
With one-off pricing you buy the website. At BuiltWeb that is £300 for a service site or £750 for e-commerce, paid as a 50% deposit and 50% on launch. After that the site is yours to keep, move, or change.
With monthly pricing you pay a smaller sum every month, often £20 to £100 or more, for as long as the site is live. It can feel easier because there is no lump sum, but the meter never stops, and in most cases you never actually own what you are paying for.
Which works out cheaper?
Do the arithmetic over three years and it is usually clear.
- One-off: £300 once, with hosting free, forever. Over three years that is still just £300 total, and you own the site.
- Monthly: £30 a month is £1,080 over three years, and you still own nothing. At £50 a month it is £1,800.
Even a modest monthly plan overtakes a one-off site within a year or two, and then keeps charging. The longer you keep the site, the worse the monthly deal looks. We cover the wider picture in why website prices vary.

What about ownership and control?
This is the part people overlook. With a rental model, stopping payment often means the site goes dark because it was never yours. Your content, your domain setup, and sometimes your customer data can be tied up in someone else's platform.
A one-off site you own outright can be hosted anywhere and edited by anyone. If you ever want to move on, you take it with you. We explain the stakes in who owns my website. Ownership is peace of mind you only appreciate when a relationship goes sour.
Are there hidden trade-offs?
Monthly plans sometimes bundle hosting, small edits, and support, which sounds convenient. But you can get the same with a one-off site — free, forever hosting and add-ons from £60 — without signing up to an open-ended contract. You choose what you pay for and when.
The one genuine advantage of monthly is cash flow if a lump sum is hard right now. Beyond that, one-off pricing wins on cost, ownership, and control for the vast majority of local businesses. For more on avoiding surprise fees, see are there hidden costs to a website.

Frequently asked questions
Do you ever get to stop paying with a monthly website?
Usually not. Monthly plans tend to run for as long as you want the site online, so the total cost keeps climbing and you never own the site outright.
Is monthly pricing ever the better choice?
It can suit businesses that want everything bundled and cannot pay a lump sum up front. But over two to three years it almost always costs more than a one-off site.
What happens to my site if I stop paying a monthly plan?
With most rental models the site goes offline because you never owned it. With a one-off site you keep it regardless, since it belongs to you.
